Getting into the shower, you brace yourself against the wall to keep from falling. Then you struggle putting on your clothes. Sitting at the table eating your breakfast, you begin to cough, sputter, and choke on what was an appetizing meal. The life of a person with Parkinson’s Disease is much more difficult than the life of a person without the disease. Everyday tasks seem grueling and unattainable. Scenarios, such as the one above, occur every day and wreak havoc on innocent people’s lives. Even though the number of patients with PD continues to rise, the government still does not provide the adequate funding to answer questions surrounding Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive disorder that affects the Central Nervous System (CNS). The Central Nervous System is the portion of the body that encompasses the brain and spinal cord (Abromovitz 13). Parkinson’s Disease is characterized by an abnormal motor output. The output is irregular because impulses are blocked and can not be interpreted. Since the impulses can not be deciphered, the messages are misconstrued and the brain confuses commands (Hains 1). According to a 2006 survey, five percent or 1.5 million Americans have Parkinson’s Disease.
